Excellence[edit]

Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other.

(What does that mean? Everyone is expected to follow the Anti-Harassment Policy, please familiarize yourself with it.) TWO MINUTES MAX

Pyconaut- Excellence is about caring for yourself, others, the space, and the community, it is about calling out when you see something wrong, and being available to help others. Being excellent can be doing things like taking out the trash, fixing a broken machine, cleaning up one of the areas, etc. As long as you follow the one rule, you will be welcome at noisebridge. We also have a Strict anti harassment policy, so if you are making people feel harassed through your actions, you will be asked to leave.

LXPK- we have also revamped the wiki page to have much better info, and have started some communication classes on mondays https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Excellence

New members/philanthropists[edit]

Is anyone trying to become a philanthropist or Member? If not move on. No long discussions.

Pyconaut- Once you come by for a while and have a lot of trust from the community, people might start asking if you want to become a philanthropist (you can also apply right away if you think the benefits are worth it). A philanthropist is the next trust level after daytime access (30 day token) usually in escalating participation. You get 24/7 access during non plague times, pay some money (40 to 80 dollars a month), you must know how to open and close the space, give tours, and introduce new people to the space. We want you to be able to help more people be able to access the space, and be excellent! To apply you get a big M Member to sponsor you, then you fill out a Philanthropy pledge and read all the associated materials, then you come to a Tuesday meeting to submit the application. During that meeting you will be questioned for a bit, and then if no one objects to you being a philanthropist, you will become one.

Pyconaut- Big M Members are different from just being a member of the community, this is the highest trust level of the noisebridge community, it means that everyone in the community trusts that you would make good decisions about how noisebridge can move forward. This is an annoying bureaucratic level of trust, as the only theoretical benefit is that you get to block big C consensus items, and vote on who we place on our board. To become one, you need to go through a four week process, where you fill out a membership form sponsored by two big M members. You bring it to a tuesday meeting where it is submitted, your membership will be discussed at that meeting, then at the next tuesday meeting your membership is discussed again and if it gets to consensus, you will be asked to leave the room while the members present decide if they want to block you or not, if no Member blocks your membership application you become a Member. For the next two weeks any big M member can retroactively block your membership for any reason. If you get blocked figure out why, fix the issue and then reapply at a later time.

Pyconaut- we might change how membership and philanthropy works in the near future to make it more accessable.

Fundraising Update[edit]

How's it all going

Part in feburary mostly outside around valentines day try to get noisebridge more functional before the event working on zine to talk about noisebridge 5mof talks noisebridge history talks auction talk with other hackerspaces and help them as well we need more help with planning on thursdays at 6

Big C Consensus Items[edit]

Nobody likes 3 hour meetings, only explain if people ask

consensus is the process by which things that can't be done through basic do-ocracy (things that affect others in the space.) It has two flavors, small c and big C. Small c consensus is the process where things that might cause slight issues in the space (events, big projects, moving rooms, etc), you just talk with the community before doing things. Big C consensus is the process by which actions are taken at noisebridge that are too big, too expensive, or too critical to be done by small c consensus. These are things like Moving, spending a lot of money, or doing legal bureaucratic garbage. This is a two week+ process where an item is proposed on the first week (if possible you should already have the item posted in draft consensus items, and the binder). At that meeting it will be discussed for a while, then the next week it will be discussed again, and if people feel confident, it will be brought up for consensus, and if no big M member blocks the consensus item it passes and becomes a Consensed item. If the proposal changes a lot or gets blocked it continues for another week, until it passes or gets withdrawn

Consensus Items [edit]

Only for talking about Big C consensus items, small c consensus items should be discussed with people at the space at the time of the change/new item.

https://discuss.noisebridge.info/t/consensus-proposal-philanthropists-becoming-members-need-only-1-additional-sponsorship-and-2-months-of-participation/2825/

Proposal for consideration starting from meeting Jan 25, 2022: Philanthropists become Members when they satisfy the following conditions: 1 additional Sponsor signature (Member) on their application form. at least 8 weeks elapsed time since becoming a Philanthropist. Submitted for consideration; conversation on this forum topic encouraged.

The current difference between big m and small m member is that you have been confirmed to be one by the other big m members, and that you can block a big C concensus item

Recently there has been a issue of the idea that no one can be a big m member but also that being one does not matter.

We find out any issues that a philanthropist has pretty easily, so why should they go through the questioning all over again when they were questioned for philanthopist.

Currently the focus of aguments around big c items is currently in very few hands. It is deffinitly better if the full discussion is wider.

Pyconaut- In favor- but woried about if ther will be issues with to many people in the blocking position in big c items, but i will worry about that if it actually happens

LXPK: the primary feature is what it omits rather than what it adds. I'm in fabor of what it adds. You can treat the same same member for both sponsorships is good. when I was reading the thread. Liz the weeks between member and philantropist can be blocked. Functionally that can be an opportunity to change their mind period. Is that right nthmost?

NTHMOST: yes

LXPK: Maybe it might be good to add some clarifing liz vs niomi's proposal on how automatic it is for someone to change from philanthropist to member. And what blocks mean for them during the interm period.

NTHMOST: we already have a 2 week oh crap period afterwards if we want to block them

Lxpk- Some of the questions people ask could be added to the form (things like peoples definitions of stuff, and what they want to do noisebridge).

how do we think about edge cases where the philanthropist is not often around- the application could help with this a lot. Having the automatic nature might be hard

having people fill the membership form after 4 weeks of philanthropy could be conventinally the same as our current way we do things.

Pyconaut- i think that these modifications would be very useful

LXPK- we can have the menbership form be filled out at the same time as the philanthropy, to make it easy.

Filling out the form could remove the hazing period at meetings where people get questioned

having the form filled out 4 weeks ahead of time would be great for people to help them know the person applying. Also would help them seek out that person to get them to know them ahead of time.

more discussion will be on discuss

Discussion[edit]

Discussion Item 1[edit]

update on all the stuff laser stuff

Electrical updates for lazery lazer

we need to change the plugs on the laser and the fume exstractor, we need conduit for the plugs (laser and exstractor can be no more the 6 feet from plug)

Discussion Item 2[edit]

Ronald Corona would like to talk about Noisebridge group projects.

Big group projects for the community?

relay- Create noisecoin token system for vending machine project

Mark- it is hard to find out what is happening at noisebridge, esppecially right now. We need an easy way for people to know what groups noisebridge has and how to join. We don't have sinage in space or talk about it at meetings. We need a project or guilds board. There are a lot of intrests but people are not forming groups

TJ - Mark, totally agree. We usually did project work with Github. People had a hard time accessing it and without people propping up using it isn't easily maintained. The one thing you said we haven't tried is putting flyers and signage around the area. If there's no one and you see something, you could say this is a cool project, please let us know and put your name on it.

Mark - To that point, there are many things in space meant to be hacked on that aren't being and sit there. We could get rid of them or start project groups to hack on them. NGALAC could be worked on. People have been doing stuff to it and its state needs assessment.

Ronald - We need a true noisebridge project not just personal or group projects.

LXPK- we have a few projects related to these different ideas. LX - We have Wiki Projects and Proposals category pages. https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Category:Projects https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Category:Proposals And groups and guilds can always announce things via https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Announcements in terms of what they want to announce or ask for. We want to find at least 2-5 maintainers for every group and get

LXPK- we should have a goal to get 2 to 5 people mantaining every major group at noisebridge.

Project temlplate note wall for ideas, someplace in the space

LXPK- having an understanding of which resources work and which ones need repairs. Some form of standard form or an invintory of what is working. Mantnience logs.

Mark- Someone put a list like this on the hackatorium 5 months ago but did not keep up with it.

LX - We could mention the maintenance log updating needing doing every meeting and then check into it after meetings.

Relay- qr code that links to local page for items.

LXPK- we have them for tools and groups.

pyconaut- I think it will be very useful for maintaining projects and one of the current problems with the versions we tried before is that at the basic level a lot of these wuold not be accessible to add to. When they come up with an idea or something. A lot of NBers are not coders or wiki people. If someone wants to do a woodworking project they will not have the ability to put it on the wiki. Something that could be useful would be a computer at the front of the space hooked up to the monitor where people can fill out a google form or something with projects or proposals and it could show those with links to the wiki page designed to show the groups and how to contact them.

LXPK - an info kiosk.

Pyconaut - yes, and where you can easily fill out forms or add to it without wiki logins. We could have it fill out a form that syncs to spreadsheet that syncs to wiki. Instantly shared on wiki from a form. We can now embed spreedsheets in the wiki I think. We could make it easier for the maintainers group such that they could use kiosk when something breaks and put in the item's logs on the wiki. So people in the space can walk over and not have to pull out anything. Another way to do it would be to have a computer logged into wiki but that could be chaotic.

LXPK - we could put info there to help people learn how to use and improve wiki, signage, and other documentation.

Pyconaut - yeah we want to have easy access info at the front of the space and a good kiosk is beneficial for things like class lists and stuff. I remember a lot of different makerspaces have the first thing you see when you come in is a kiosk that allows you to see events happening and find contacts or propose contacts.

LXPK - It would be good to have a non-touch based UI I know eye tracking is a bit cutting edge at the moment but everyone touching the same computer might have some risks.

Pyconaut - a waterproof sanitizable keyboard might be around or we could get one cheap.

The scope is covered by the wiki if it works perfetly. Danger in setting up parallel system. Why would someone lazy for wiki use this?

Pyconaut - a lot of current noisebridgers currently don't know how to edit a wiki. Filling a google form is a lower bar. Every time I see people mention using Trello or Github or new high-end apps that is a bar that most people will never cross. Pretty much you have to stick to google forms and things that the average person will know how to fill out. Not coders but average people.

TJ - we've set up kiosks multiple times and there hasn't been a lot of traffic.

Pyconaut - we haven't had a NB kiosk in 4 years. Banana was the last true kiosk computer and it was 3 years ago.

TJ - We've had multiple computers for public access. Maybe we could set them up to not go to sleep.

Pyconaut - those aren't kisosks, they're public access computers. In 2018 we had 4 public access computers and a dedicated yellow Kiosk computer and 3 front of house computer with one always showing Events/Meetup, one showing 6 list, and one on the Manual, and another one showed cool pictures of Noisebridge. Since the move we haven't had what older NBers would consider fully functional kiosks.

People have tried setting up a couple but they got moved.

Mark(remotely):Info kiosk at entrance would be a great project for some person or group to set up and maintain... ;) (Make it immoveable, or very hard to move. for instance, a tablet thing mounted to a wall.)

teaching new noidebridgers about stuff via having a good front of house would be great, and create a good hangout area. Make it more accessable.

We could build some more carts, or put it by the coffee machine or wall mount it.

Discussion Item 3 [DANGER: DRAMA ZONE][edit]

William Teach situation

Mark: Kick him out if he's causing drama. That is all. It is very simple.

Claus: I already asked him to leave. If he comes back and is interested in mediation, I am 100% interested and willing to sit down. Honestly I would be willing to run it for that matter, but since I was the one that had to ask him to leave there is a sort of conflict on interest. As far as I understand though my ask to leave stands until mediation, so we don't need a community concensus.

If they want to teach a clsss with the exercise gear that is cool, but if they just want to use noisebridge to store their stuff, then the stuff should leave the space.

Do-ocratic Task Board[edit]

Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Propose new tasks or pick some tasks from Github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!

End of Meeting[edit]

Note taker posts the notes[edit]

  • Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions.
  • Fill out the short summary at the top listing just announcements, consensus items, discussion topics, and names of new members and philanthropists.
  • Copy paste the notes to the next meeting page. (They will become Last meeting at midnight.)
  • Email the meeting summary to Noisebridge Discuss and Noisebridge Announce lists.
  • CC on the email treasurer@noisebridge.net and secretary@noisebridge.net if there are new members and philanthropists.
  • Edit the Current Consensus Items if anything is proposed for consensus next week.
  • Edit the Consensus Items History if anything was reached consensus or failed to reach consensus this week.

Fun things to do after[edit]

  • Reprise of the Hackernationale. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
  • PGP Key Signing could happen now (if it doesn't happen before any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the list to see who wants in on the action.

Example tasks:

  • Collect all the trash in the space into the large bins on Sunday night!
  • Document how one of the 3D printers works on the wiki, print out QR code linking to it & tape it to that printer!
  • Find us a plumber to fix the toilet and hang out with them in the space while they fix it (Perhaps organizing an entire toilet replacement workshop!)
