Participation[edit]

  • Ryan: Participation at NB can be anything from showing up and working on a personal project while hanging out with the great people at Noisebridge. Can also include philantropist or member. Run events, host events, help us to keep functioning into the future. participation is free. We do love donations. We are a non-profit, anything you donate to us will be used towards improving the space. Currently we are doing one of our weekly general meetings where we talk about what's happening at NB. Talk about complicated issue. As well as what's happening in the future.
  • Jade: NB is a do-ocracy. Build things, make things, host an event add it to the wiki.

Safespace[edit]

  • Bernice: Means that when people come to NB everyone here should respect eachother. Also means that we don't allow bullying, harrassment, unwanted attention, monopolize eachothers time. Can ask anyone to stop if they're making you uncomfortable. If not, can ask to leave. Can ask for help in asking to leave. There's also a URL for getting help w/ ask to leave.
  • Kevin: non-violent communication
        mediation
        implicit bias

Announcements[edit]

  • Ryan: Remind people that in a couple weeks NB is participating in Maker Faire. Have a booth. 3 projects on display. Neurohacker Dream Team w/ EEG. SimBridge VR walk throughs of NB. Gaming Archivist will bring live streaming arcade cabinet (NGALAC). Need help moving stuff to Maker Faire as well as being people volunteering at the booth to introduce attendees to what NB is. Will put up a volunteer sign-up list in the next couple weeks. If you want to participate or come by talk to SimBridge on Tuesday night, Dream Team on Wednesday night, Gaming Archivists on Friday night.
  • Bernice: For the whiteboardings and algorithms workshop, I'll have a job and cannot host the Wednesday workshop. Will spin up a second instance on Sundays.
  • Bernice: Sunday Streets. Asked Victor if we can photograph his art. Need help translating flyers into different languages. Going to make a table for Sunday Streets, have a channel in Slack. Have time, first instance is on July 15th.
  • Charlie: Performance tomorrow at Counter Pulse. Dance, motion capture, if you're into WebGL it would be something to get involved in. At 7:30pm.
  • Bernice: Silver spoke of a fashion show on Saturday June 2 at Omni Commons. Ask Silver for details.
  • Augur: May 12th, 7pm, Ariel Waldmen giving a talk at NB titled 'The Hackers Guide to the Galaxy'.
  • Augur: Trying to get a band to play here so we can have a cool event. Let me know if you're interested in helping set this or something like it up.

Philanthropists[edit]

Mark: Something like you pay a little bit of money and have 24x7 access and responsibilities. Needs a sponsor. Have to be part of the community and generally liked by at least a few people. Like membership in the sense that you must be responsible for closing up the space, give tours, take out the trash, pay money. Lizzie: There's a checklist of things to do when closing up the space. Augur: If you would like to apply to become a philantropist, there are applications in the membership binder w/ a section for philantropist apps. Folder is w/ tee-shits in the display cabinet up front.

Members[edit]

Augur: Very similar to being a philantropist, even more committed to helping NB survive and maintain its culture over time. have the capacity to grant access to NB. Can sponsor new members and philantropists. Can block consensus items.

Consensus[edit]

  • Kevin: Consensus at NB is a slow and arduous process we only use to make big and important decsisions. We have long discussions in and outside of Tuesday meetings. Formally, consensus occurs at Tuesday meeting. Consensus proposals are read aloud at the community meeting for 2 weeks. Members are the only participants that can block a proposal. Middle ground inbetween blocking and consensus; members can instead, chose to stand-aside. Nuance to membership consensus decisions - can members block with out reason, hard stop. Whereas, in the proposal consensus process, blocks are an invitation for further discussion.

Discussion[edit]

Charge people when they walk in the door[edit]

  • Charlie: If you don't come here b/c you can't pay, is it worse than if you don't come here b/c it does not exist? I know this violates the fundimental paradigme of freedom and hacktivism.
  • Mark: Has this been discussed before?
  • Kevin: Noisebridge is fundamentally an open place where anyone can come in and hack w/o financial contribution. This is too far from the core identity of NB.
  • Charlie: I disagree.
  • Ryan: What's up? Is this out of need for donations?
  • Charlie: No. People will pay.
  • Augur: How would you enforce this?
  • Charlie: I could volunteer to sit at the door.
  • Augur: Nothing prevents you from greeting folks and requesting donations today.
  • Kevin: I'd ask to leave someone gating the door requiring money from folks to enter.
  • Charlie: I wouldn't do this w/o consensus. This is in discussion phase.
  • Mark: Clearly something that's heavy on your mind. I think if this were raise for consensus it would get shot down, b/c the overwhelming majority of the commuinity is opposed to this model.
  • Ryan: Any ideas how we can make a more active effort to raise donations?
  • Augur: Could be more proactive about requesting donations.
  • Lizzie: Could remember to ask for donations when giving a tour.
  • Charlie: Doesn't proactivity as such constitute ...?
  • Ryan: We'll never be getting enough donations. Will be extending our influence of excellence with more donations until we get 1 billion dollars per year in donations. I think we have more worth to this city than Uber.
  • Augur: Or until capitalism is aboloished.
