Hobbying[edit]

Hobbying with miniature painting and terrain creation to furnish models for use with RPGs, wargames and boardgames is a fun and artistic pursuit with lots of uses for our fabrication facilities to print/lasercut/woodshop/sew hobby stuff.

Painting Miniatures[edit]

We have a portable hobby station we're bringing in to introduce people to painting minis for now, and we're looking to acquire some for NB.

  • RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES
    • PAINTS
      • Citadel: Games Workshop's official paints. Expensive and spillable pots are bad. Recommend using dropper bottle alternatives.
      • Vallejo: Good paints and better value in dropper bottles that don't spill with huge variety including many historical ranges for war era models. Dropper bottles don't spill.
      • Duncan Rhodes Two Thin Coats Paints: high-end alternative to Citadel paints and Vallejo made by the Bob Ross of miniature painting education, Duncan 'Two Thin Coats' Rhodes. Incredible triad colors for every range of color, metallic, wash, etc. Bulk discounts available from their paint rack MDF suppliers.
      • Army Painter: Army Painter Fanatic regular paints and Speedpaint 2.0 contrast washes are great paints at good prices.
    • BRUSHES
      • Get yourself some cheap synthetic brushes in a variety of sizes including some makeup brushes which are great for drybrushing.
    • GLUES
      • Superglue: Superglue with a brush applicator is best. Squeezing directly from a bottle will spill.
      • Plastic Cement: Plastic cement can be used with purchased plastic and FDM printed plastic minis but not resin prints.

Painting Tutorials[edit]

Basing Tutorials[edit]

3D Printing Miniatures[edit]

We have 3d printing Print shop. Mostly we use FDM plastic printers because they're reliable and good enough for durable larger things. Increasingly mini painters want to print fine detail minis with resin printers which we have a few but we need people to use them to justify keeping them.

Terrain Making[edit]

You can make all kinds of terrain and stuff from building materials with just simple crafting tools.

  • PVA glue can turn just about anything into a paintable texturable surface for terrain and building construction.

Bay Area Hobby Shops[edit]

We want to support our local hobby shops which have many of the products useful to hobbyists as well as valuable community support for tournaments and gaming meetups and rentable tables you can use to get into hobbying without having to set up your own home tabletop gaming boards.

  • Game Post (Soma)
  • Game Kastle (many locations)
